This Week in EGMONT

21-27 August 2011

Quote of the week: If you would not be forgotten as soon as you are dead, either write things worth reading or do things worth writing. ~~Benjamin Franklin

Egmonster “Good Egg”: The Egmonster “Good Egg” of the week award goes to Russ Lang, who milled all of the cedar required to build a new and beautiful front deck on the Egmont Community Hall. Russ has accessed cedar at several places around the area, hauled his mill to the location, set it up, spent hours and fuel to mill the cedar and hauled the finished wood to the Community hall for construction of the new deck. Russ then assisted Tom Silvey in the construction of the new deck. And when Tom finished the trim on Saturday morning and Dawn Henderson spread on the first coat of finish, we had an item of beauty that will serve our community for many years to come. Thank you Russ for your contributions that made this possible, and thank all of you who contributed in so many ways to make this project an improvement that we can be proud of. Come out to the Concert on Wednesday Evening and appreciate both the music and the new deck.

Thrift Store Lots of books and clothing and various items you cannot live another moment without. Open every Wednesday and Saturday from Noon until 3:00 pm. Contact Linda Baillie. (604) 883-0251.

Fire Practice Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm is practice for the Egmont and District Volunteer Fire Department. We are looking for new members with community spirit. Get involved and join the team! Your community needs you and you will be glad you did.

Fire Ban: All fires, with the exception of small cooking fires are banned on the sunshine Coast from the 15th of April until the 15th of October.

Music at the Hall: Wednesday, August 24th at 7:00 pm, recording artist Linda Connell Studley will be performing at the Egmont Community Hall. Linda, who has two CDs released, plays her own individual style of Folk, Blues and Jazz, and will be appearing at the Community Hall after a gig at the Pender Harbor Garlic Festival. Tickets for the “coffee house” style event are $10.00 at the door. Come, enjoy the music, coffee, and a conversation with friends.

Movie Night Friday Night is Movie Night at the Egmont Community Hall. On August 26th, the early film will be “First Kid”. Secret Service agent Sam Simms is assigned to protect the President’s rebellious 14 year old son Luke. Simms would rather be protecting the President, and Luke would prefer being just a regular kid without a watchdog trailing him everywhere he goes. But a genuine friendship develops between the two when Simms volunteers to teach Luke how to deal with a school bully, and untie his tongue so that he can win over a cute girl in class. But when Luke’s mysterious Internet buddy convinces him to ditch his bodyguard in a crowded mall, the fun and games suddenly become a matter of life and death. Rated PG, this film runs 101 minutes.

After a short intermission, we will screen “Cider House Rules”, a story of how far a young man must travel to find the place where he truly belongs. Homer Wells has lived nearly his entire life within the walls of St. Cloud’s Orphanage in rural Maine. Though groomed by its proprietor, Dr. Larch to be his successor, Homer nonetheless feels the need to strike out on his own and experience the world outside. Then, while working at an apple orchard, Homer falls for the beautiful Candy and learns some powerfully indelible lessons about life, love and home. Rated PG-13, this film runs 125 minutes.

On September 2nd, the early movie (6:00 pm) will be “The Secret Garden”. After the sudden death of her parents, Mary Lennox is sent from their home in India to the English estate of a distant family friend. Sand and lonely, her only interest lies in a secret garden, abandoned after a tragic accident occurred there. With the help of Dickon, an engaging local boy and Colin, her guardian’s invalid son, Mary’s spirit is gradually reawakened as they bring the garden back to life. Together they transform the barren earth into a world of splendor, discovering its magic, unlocking it’s mysteries, and revealing the secret of happiness to them all. Rated PG, this film runs 100 minutes.

After a short intermission, we will screen “Geronimo – An American Legend”, the story of the fearless warrior who was the last Indian Leader to surrender to the white man. Betrayed by the Army’s Legendary “Indian Fighter” General George Crook, Geronimo leads a small band of warriors in escape. Pursued by a principled officer, a brizzled army scout, and a gung-ho West Point graduate, Geronimo evades capture through brilliant military strategy and cutthroat courage. His true story is both an action/adventure and a spiritual journey through the heart of a warrior. Rated PG-13, this film runs 115 minutes.

Garden Club We are still looking for Volunteers to start the Egmont Garden Club and the Community Garden. We have received a grant from the Sunshine Coast Foundation to help finance materials for this purpose. Look at the community garden in the area behind the hall.

Recycle Volunteer. The Egmont Community Club is seeking a volunteer to handle recycling for the community of Egmont. Believe it or not – the recycling earns our club about $1,000 per year. We need this money to help pay expenses. Please contact the Egmont Community Club via email tomdawnecc@gmail.com

Coastal Events: Pender Harbour Hiking Club meets Monday and Wednesday mornings for a hike in the North Sunshine coast area. Most hikes are approximately 1.5 hours, and easy to moderate difficulty.

Monday, Aug 22, Egmont Forest Service Road. Though this is a FSR, it is through the forest and there is some elevation gain along the way. We hike from Egmont Road (just past North Lake) into Jervis Inlet. We will meet at PetroCan at 8:15 to car pool to the trail head to start the hike around 8:30.

Wednesday, Aug 24, Golf Course Loop. This is a beautiful hike through the forest off the highway by the golf course. Meet at PetroCan at 8:15 to car pool to the golf course to start the hike at 8:30.

Upcoming events:

Egmont & District VFD Society Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday, September 4th, at 14:00 hours (2:00 PM) at the Egmont & District VFD Fire Hall, 5592 Egmont Road.
